Westoby Plantation
has been operating for over 25 years and has been operated by the present
owner
since 1991. In this time Westoby has developed
an advanced banana plantation giving visitors a unique look in to the
lush tropical oasis. As well as our unique plantation tours Westoby also
has a fantastic café on location offering gourmet meals and exotic
fruit beverages in a lush tropical setting. Our range of homemade tropical
refreshments,
including our range of gourmet fruit wines, and light lunches are served
in our relaxing tropical garden. Westoby Plantation is the a destination
point for many tour companies including Pinnacle Routs, Villa Carlotta
and various interstate and overseas
tour companies. Westoby Plantation offers a range of informative and interesting
tours through our established operating banana plantation. This is a
unique experience and a surprising tropical escape within the hot and
bare Carnarvon area.
Our tours are conducted by the owner and operator of the plantation
who has years of experience and can offer a wide range of interesting
facts about the plantation as well as a lot of surprising and intriguing
information about tropical fruits. Our plantation tours are available
twice a day from June to October at 11am and 2pm. From October through
to May the tours only occur once
a day at 11am.
Dampier
Salt Mine Tours -
Half day tours of Dampier Salt, one of the world's largest salt producers.
See from the pumping of sea water to the final product awaiting shipment.
Dampier Salt is located 65km north of Carnarvon. The lake occupies 2072
square kilometres separated from the Indian Ocean by coastal dunes and
outcrops of rock. Both gypsite and salt are mined. Tours can be arranged
by contacting the Carnarvon Tourist Bureau on (08) 9941 1146.
NorWest Fisheries - Used
to be the Whaling Station, but now processing prawns and scallops. Tours
can be arranged through the Carnarvon

One
Mile Jetty -
Located 4km west of Carnarvon.
Walk or take the "Coffee Pot" train along the historical One
Mile Jetty which was built in 1897. The Jetty is 1493m long and is now
part of the Carnarvon Heritage Precinct.
It
is the longest jetty in the north west and was onced used as a deep sea
port for the shipment of local
produce and wool in Perth. There is a muesum along side the jetty. Museum
admission is by a Gold coin donation. View the Gascoyne River mouth,
mangrove and marine life, migrating birds and jetty activity.
Tramway
and Townwalk Trail -
Ride one of our trains from the end of the One Mile Jetty all the way
into
the centre of town. The "Kimberley" steam train operates on
a seasonal basis (June to Sept) and the "Banana Clipper" and
the "Coffee Pot" complete the trio for the rest of the year.
A 2.5km walk trail runs the length of the tramway allowing close observation
of the flora of the region through interpretive signage.
Blowholes -
Located 71km north of Carnarvon. Powerful ocean waves are forced through
sea
caves and jets of water are forced up into the air to heights of 20
metres, producing a spectacular
sight.
One
kilometre south lies a protected beach surrounded by coral reef. A
small pool
adjacent to the island contains tropical fish and shells.
Beware
of King Waves when visiting any of the coastline locations
H.M.A.S. “Sydney” Memorial
Cairn - Follow the signs from the Blowholes to the memorial located 7km
further
north.
Erected at high rock on Quobba Station, to commemorate the tragic battle
between H.M.A.S. Sydney and the German raider Kormoran which possibly took
place off Carnarvon on the 19th of November 1941.
Heritage Precinct -
Take a walk down memory lane
through the Lighthouse Keeper's Cottage Museum of the Precinct Train Station,
both exhibits of the pioneer days of the Gascoyne region. Enjoy a coffee
at the kiosk open daily from 8.00am to 5.00pm
Pelican Point
Beach - Located 6km south-east of town. Pelican Point Beach was originally
the southern mouth of the Gascoyne River and is now a popular fishing,
windsurfing and swimming spot.
Rocky Pool -
Located about 55km east of Carnarvon along the Gascoyne Junction Road to
the turn-off and a further 4km to the pool.
Rocky Pool is a fresh water pool suitable for swimming nearly all year
round. The pool is lined with spectacular ghost gums making it an ideal
spot for a picnic or barbecue.
Gnaraloo Station - Located 150km north of Carnarvon.
This magnificent piece of coastline offers some of the best surfing,
diving and fishing in WA. Relax along beautiful pristine beaches and
bays. Camping
and accommodation facilities available.
Mount
Augustus -
450 kilometres inland from Carnarvon you come to Mount Augustus — the
world’s largest monolith, twice the size of Ayer’s Rock. Coach
tours are available from Carnarvon and pass through dramatic scenery and
remarkable specimens of geology.
Red Bluff -
The Bluff is world renowned surfing spot with waves ranging from one metre
to six metres depending on the time of the year. Access to the Bluff
can also be accessed by following the limestone coral road to the north
at the Blowholes for 71 kilometres.
Local
Fishing -
Enjoy fishing from the prawn jetty at sunset. Carnarvon is an immensely
popular fishing area both with locals and visitors. The area
supports both
handline and game fisherman and the most popular spot is the Prawn Jetty
on Babbage Island. Mulloway and big Tailor are year round catches, with
Pink Snapper, Bream, Shark, Mackerel and Tuna available accordiing to season
and
conditions. Blue Manna and Mangrove crabs are also plentiful in the region
Pioneer
Park - A pleasant picnic spot which provides
a glimpse of Carnarvon history including two enormous bones from
a Blue Whale which
form an arch over the entrance.
Lighthouse Keepers
Cottage Museum - Was built around 1900 as the home of the lighthouse
keeper and his family and was used until the 1970's when
the lighthouse became electric. It is located on Babbage Island near the
One Mile Jetty and is open to the public.
The
Coast -
Between the Blow holes, Point Quobba through to Gnarloo Station is
well worth
viewing.
The road is not sealed but can be accessed with
a 2WD vehicle though a 4WD vehicle is recommended. This stretch of coast
is virtually untouched providing spectacular views of Cape Cuvier and exceptional
fishing. At 3 Mile Camp and Gnarloo Bay you will find pristine beaches
with excellent coral outcrops. If surfing is your passion, 3 Mile Beach
has been rated by many as having the best left break in the world. Beware
of King Waves when visiting any of the coastline locations
